Whereas the king has committed to Sybil Giffard and Master Walter Giffard her son the castle of Oxford to live in the houses of the same castle for as long as it pleases the king, order to Henry of Bath and Philip Lovel, king’s treasurer, to cause the king’s mills below the aforesaid castle to be committed to the said Sybil and Walter to hold for as long as it pleases the king, rendering therefor per annum at the Exchequer as much as others shall have wished to give for them.

Concerning relief. The king has taken the homage of John de Wik’ son and heir of John de Wik’ for the entire land and bailiwick of the king’s forest of Savernake which the aforesaid John his father held of the king in chief, and he has delivered that land and bailiwick to him. Adam Gurdun has made fine with the king by one and a half marks of gold for having the king’s confirmation of a grant and surrender of the bailiwick of the king’s forests of Woolmar and Aliceholt which J. de Venuz who held the same bailiwick of the king in fee made to the aforesaid Adam and Constance daughter and heir of the aforesaid John whom the same Adam has taken to wife. And of the aforesaid gold he will pay one moiety in the king’s Wardrobe at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist and the other moiety at next Michaelmas. And he has land in Hampshire. He has paid that gold in silver to P. of Winchester clerk of Artald de Sancto Romano in the king’s Wardrobe and is quit.

The king has committed to Robert del Val custody of the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire with appurtenances excepting the honours of Peverel, Boulogne, Haugley and the barony of Rayleigh from next Easter for as long as it pleases the king, rendering therefor per annum at the Exchequer as much as Thomas de Ramesden’ was accustomed to render for the same whilst he had custody of the same. Order to bishops, abbots etc. to be intendant and respondent to the same Robert as king’s sheriff in all things which pertain to the custody of the aforesaid counties, and there are [letters] patent.

Concerning a fine of gold. The abbot of Coggeshall gives the king 55 m. for having the king’s charter and acquitting it [from the fees] of the seal, namely that his woods and heaths (‘brueras’) in Tolleshunt Major, Tolleshunt Tregoz, Inworth, Childerditch, and Little Warley within the metes of the king’s forest of Essex he may enclose with a small ditch and hay according to the assize of the forest so that deer with their fawns may freely and without impediment enter and exit, whereof he will render one moiety at St. John the Baptist in the forty-first year in the king’s Wardrobe for gold to be bought therefrom and the other moiety on the morrow of [All] Souls next. 1 He has paid 27½ m. to Artald etc. 2 for the first term. And for the last term he has paid 27½ m. to Peter de Rivallis in the king’s Wardrobe and is quit.

William Walerand who took the first-born daughter and other heiress of Hugh of Kilpeck to wife gives the king three marks of gold for having the bailiwick of Hay Hereford and the wood of Coyttemor which the aforesaid Hugh held of the king in chief concerning which he ought to pay one mark of gold cash down by the hand of William of Gloucester, goldsmith, in the king’s Wardrobe and he will pay the other mark of gold in the same Wardrobe at St. John the Baptist and the third mark of gold in the next quindene of Michaelmas. Afterwards he paid those three marks of gold in the king’s Wardrobe to Peter de Rivallis in the forty-second year and is quit.
