12 April. Westminster. For Matilda who was the wife of James de Aldith’ [sic]. To the treasurer and barons of the Exchequer. Whereas a short while ago after the death of John son of Alan of Arundel, deceased, who held of the king in chief and who was bound to the king in divers debts at the Exchequer on the day he died, the king had given and granted to Matilda, who was the wife of the same John, £200 of the goods and chattels of the same John to be distributed to the poor as shall have seemed most useful for the salvation of the soul of the same John, and John son and heir of the aforesaid John who afterwards mainperned before the king (‘coram nobis’) to pay the aforesaid debts, to whom the king betook himself for the same, which he then caused to be attermined at the aforesaid Exchequer at £100 per annum, by which the goods and chattels of the abovesaid John, his father, came to his hand, and they are still in his hands, and whereas the king had commanded him on several occasions to cause Matilda [to have] the aforesaid £200 from the aforesaid goods and chattels, which he has refused to do up to now, asserting that in the parts of the Marches in which he stays he was bound to do nothing at the king’s command, and neither did he do anything about this in any manner, at which the king marvels and is considerably disturbed, the king, wishing that his grant previously made to the aforementioned Matilda concerning the aforesaid £200 be observed in all things, commands them to cause the aforesaid pounds to be levied without delay from the goods and chattels of the same John according to the law and customs of the aforesaid Exchequer, and to cause Matilda to have them, as seems better and quicker to them. 24 Oct. Westminster. For the bishop of Lincoln. To the barons of the Exchequer. Because the venerable father R. bishop of Lyncoln for the king’s urgent business made a courtesy (‘curialitatem fecit) of the £100 which he has paid in the king’s Wardrobe to Master Henry de Caudano then keeper of the king's Wardrobe, the king had remitted to the same bishop all the indignation and rancour of mind which the king had conceived against the same by reason of his service to the king which at the king’s order in Lent in the forty-eighth year he did not do, or for any other reason, and furthermore, by a fine of 500 m., the same bishop has made fine with the king to be wholly quit of the aforesaid service which he did not do on this occasion just as the king fully learnt by his letters patent which the same bishop has in respect thereof. Order therefore to cause the aforesaid bishop to be quit of both the aforesaid £100 and 500 m.
